Agricultural Engineering

After successfully completing a degree in Agricultural Engineering at Harper Adams in 1998 several fabrication and alteration jobs have been undertaken in the farm workshop.
Workshop facilities include Morse 4 pillar drill, lathe, milling machine, 275 amp mig welder, fly press, as well as various other small tools. Most of the work undertaken so far has been for use on the home farm, although several projects have been undertaken for customers.

Some of the projects undertaken are:
  • Conversion of artic step frame to farm trailer using own design sprung drawbar. The front step was removed, and the air suspension and air brakes and electrics were altered to suit the tractor connectors
  • Conversion of curtain-sided artic step frame trailer to a plant trailer with new outriggers, hydaulic ramps and beaver tail capable of carrying 20 ton tracked machine.
  • Addition of ramps to a previously converted trailer for moving telehandler between bale stacks in summer. Hydraulically operated from tractor cab or at rear of trailer, incorporating a locking tap and accumulator.
  • Fitting hydraulic steering to a Grimme two row potato harvester. An extra slice was added to the harvester spool block and was operated by a spare function on the machine control box. This also included a gauge to indicate when wheels were straight.
  • Hydraulic folding bale spike for tractor front linkage. This moves awkward bales on the bale-stacking tractor and is also good for nudging bales into line for stacker pickup.
  • Potato box filler, manual hydraulically operated tips boxes to reduce fall of potatoes from cross conveyor into boxes. This allows non stop box filling with minimal risk of bruising the crop.
  • Potato box tipper fitted to  telehandler. Operated by the forklift auxiliary hydraulic function tips boxes to 150 degrees to allow re-grading of boxed potatoes.
  • Hydraulic power pack drive provides hydraulic power for the potato box filler from three-phase electricity supply incorporating a reservoir and cooler.
  • Bale grab with three bottom tines and fourteen side tines. This lifts and grips four mini Hesston bales, which can be turned through 90 degrees without dropping, ideal for turning bales to load artics to reduce overall load height.
  • Tractor weight boxes, ideal for putting a selection of different weights into one box and is also a handy toolbox carrier when weights are not required. It can incorporate a thick plate base with a central towing eye for a D link.
