Organic potatoes

Christopher’s have been growing potatoes at Rhydunnog farm for three generations. The farm is located in the foothills of the Black Mountains in West Herefordshire, and has been farmed organically since 1995. The undulating land is a rich red clay loam and produces bright skinned potatoes. Organic potatoes are grown in a long rotation with wheat, clover and grass leys for grazing which reduces disease and virus levels in the crops.

To provide our customers with the highest quality organic potatoes, we dry brush before grading and bagging. This enables the potatoes to be graded very effectively to maintain a quality product in the bags. We prefer not to wash the potatoes as it reduces the shelf life. However this service can be offered at extra cost if required.

Currently we are packing organic potatoes in to 12.5kg and 25.0kg paper bags. Up to forty of the 25kg bags can be stacked on a pallet for transportation. We are able to package potatoes in any style or design of bag to suit customer requirements or even use your own bags.

In 2009 we have grown milva, cosmos, diseree and sante. Standard options are ware (45-65mm) or bakers (+65mm) Other split grading options are available at extra cost. It is our aim to provide a year round supply of potatoes for our customers, this is achieved by using earlies grown on rented land and our own potatoes for main crop. Organic potatoes are being traded at lower prices this season, and as a result we are offering ware and bakers at £250.00/ton ex farm in 25kg bags. The weather this season has been kinder to us potato growers and samples are looking very good, with clean bright skins and good size.

Transport can be arranged for all quantities of potatoes. It is however most economic to transport full pallets (40 bags). Transport is undertaken by Palletline who offer a next day service or economy service (2-3days). They work weekdays only so planning is essential to minimise transport costs. Potatoes are bagged to order to ensure a good quality product reaches our customers. This will normally be 24 hours from ordering to despatch, however more notice is much appreciated when we are busy with field work during the spring and autumn.

Price is dependent on bag size and quantity ordered, so please call Jon for a quotation or for any further information.
